MSPT - In December of 2009, the Minnesota State Poker Tour (MSPT) was born and hosted its first ever $1,100 buy-in Main Event at Canterbury Park in Shakopee, MN, attracting 130 players and was won by 20 year old John Dragich of St. Cloud, MN who took home $34,765.
In 2010 and 2011 the Minnesota State Poker Tour partnered with 6 separate Minnesota casinos and each Casino hosted 1 main event each year.
In 2012, the MSPT increased its presence to 12 events in 5 Midwest states and with the expansion was renamed to the Mid-States Poker Tour. Over time, the Tour expanded to several states outside its Midwest roots, and eventually the name Mid-States Poker Tour was no longer utilized as the Tour was simply referred to as MSPT or msptpoker.com.
Since its 2009 inception, the MSPT has gone on to host 279 Main Events with a > $1K buy-in and 70 Regional multi-day ($360/$400) tournaments combined to total over $205 Million awarded to date, as well as a countless number of series and side events.
The largest MSPT Main Event to date took place at The Venetian Las Vegas in June of 2018 where David Levine of Rancho Cucamongo, CA defeated a massive field of 4,411 runners to take home $495,500 in a heads-up deal!
REBRAND / MAJORS - We are excited to announce that the MSPT will now be rebranded to the MAJOR SERIES OF POKER – THE TOUR (MSPT), and with that will soon be announcing the dates and locations of 5 annual MAJORS (STAY TUNED) at separate properties, each of which will boast a minimum $1 MILLION GUARANTEED PRIZE POOL as well as a beautiful, custom award for the winner! Each MAJOR will include a 1.5X multiplier on Player of the Year points, and MAJOR wins will be tracked on the MSPT Leaderboards as well as within each player’s personal MSPT profile. Not to mention, MAJOR wins will be crucial going forward to achieving MSPT Hall of Fame status.
The complete rebrand will transition between now and June 1.
SIDE EVENTS / AWARDS – With a start date to be announced soon, the MSPT will now be counting all side events > $200 toward player of the year points and all $ won will now be reflected within each player’s personal MSPT profile! Though we can’t disclose yet, there will also be a collectible, tracked award (not Rings) that will be given to the winner of every MSPT event > $200 beginning June 1. In addition, there will be a Leaderboard to reflect which players have earned the most of said award and it will be reflected within each player’s personal MSPT profile.
SENIOR’S TOUR – We are excited to announce the launch of the MSPT Senior (50+) Tour, in conjunction with the MSPT - THE TOUR. With a start date to be announced soon, all MSPT Senior tournaments (generally $300-$400 buy-ins, but may include $1Ks) taking place during a MSPT Series will count toward its own Senior POY Leaderboard. At year end, the 2025 Senior POY will receive a $5,000 cash prize! Stay tuned for exciting announcements on upcoming MSPT Senior (50+) events!
HALL OF FAME – When the MSPT Hall of Fame was established in 2017, there were 18 total Main Events that season which was the same as 2016 and 2015. At the time the HoF requirements were set, they were appropriate for that era. Compare that to 2024 when there were 30 Main Events, a 67% increase in opportunity for players to earn their status. This is why its time to adjust the HoF requirements to appropriately reflect the era and the Tour’s new vision to include MAJORS (think golf), which will now become a focal point of the adjusted requirements of entry into the MSPT Hall of Fame. Though the requirements are being adjusted to reflect the era, those who have achieved MSPT Hall of Fame status relative to their respective era will always maintain their earned status as a MSPT Hall of Famer! The new and improved MSPT Hall of Fame requirements will be posted by Wednesday, March 19 on msptpoker.com.
