Thomas Boivin Defeats Mukul Pahuja to Win MSPT Venetian for $352,153
Created (6/11/2016 3:00:11 AM by Chad Holloway)

The third annual Mid-States Poker Tour Venetian Main Event proved to be a record-setting affair.

First, it was the largest MSPT in history with 2,887-entry field (499 entries on Day 1a; 968 Day 1b; and 1,420 Day 1c), which smashed the advertised $2 million guarantee by creating a $2,829,260 prize pool. Second, Day 1c was the largest-ever single flight ever held at the Venetian (all 72 tables were reserved for tournament play). Finally, Belgium's Thomas Boivin captured the title and a $352,153 -- the largest prize ever awarded on the MSPT – after a heads-up deal with poker pro Mukul Pahuja.

Boivin is a 26-year-old player who holds a Masters Degree in Civil Engineering. He learned the game when he was just 16 years old and cut his chops online. According to HendonMob, he had $84,178 in live tournament earnings before this score.

"It's definitely a good moment for the money to come," said Boivin, who plans to stick around Vegas (it's his first time here) to try his luck at the 2016 World Series of Poker across town.

Boivin played a patient game at the final table as Pahuja controlled the action with a big stack. However, Boivin hit a heater with four players remaining and entered heads-up play against Pahuja, WPT Season XII Player of the Year, close enough in chips. The two proceeded to change the chip lead several times before taking a timeout to strike a deal. Instead of one of them winning the 403k first-place prize, they agreed that Pahuja would lock up $300,000, Bolvin $352,153, and that $41,494 would be left on the table.

Soon thereafter, Boivin shoved the button with six-eight suited and Pahuja called with king-jack. Pahuja held through the flop and turn, but then Bolvin spiked a gutshot straight on the river to clinch victory.

Long before that, the third and final day of play saw 22 players return to action, and it didn't take long for them to hit the rail. Tizzy Brown was the first to go after his pocket aces were cracked by kings, and then the last Minnesotan and MSPT champ standing, Dan "DQ" Hendrickson followed him out the door in 21st for $20,371.

Others to fall over the next few hours were start-of-the-day chip leader Matt Herrera (16th - $24,615), Delmiro Toledo (14th - $26,876), and James Mangararo (11th - $33,951), just to name a few.

Here's a look at how things ultimately played out at the final table:

2 Mukul Pahuja Long Island NY $300,000 1,800

9 Kevin Johnson Raritan NJ $42,439 1,100
10 Edward Lewis Brentwood CA $33,951 1,000

Season 7 of the MSPT will continue July 14-17 with a $350 Regional Event at Milwaukee's Potawatomi Hotel & Casino. Then, from July 16-24, the MSPT will return to Meskwaki Casino in Tama, Iowa for the Iowa State Poker Championship. For more information on those events and more, visit msptpoker.com.

Mukul Pahuja Eliminated in 2nd Place ($300,000)
Created (6/11/2016 2:56:57 AM by Chad Holloway)

Mukul Pahuja

In what would be the final hand of the tournament, Thomas Bolvin moved all in from the button and Mukul Pahuja wasted little time in calling off his last 8 million.

Bolvin: 8c 6c

Pahuja: kc js

The jh 9c 8s flop paired both players, but Pahuja maintained his lead. The 5s turn gave Bolvin a gutshot straight draw, and unfortunately for Pahuja, he hit it as the 7c spiked on the river.

Created (6/11/2016 2:37:33 AM by Chad Holloway)

Mukul Pahuja pulled out to an early lead at the beginning of heads-up play, but Thomas Bolvin just doubled through.

It happened when Pahuja limped the button, Bolvin raised to 2.4 million, and Pahuja moved all in. Bolvin called off for 15.2 million total and the cards were flipped.

Pahuja: 7d da

Bolvin: 8s 8h

The board ran out 9s kc 4d 3h 5d and Bolvin is back in the lead.

Thomas Bolvin Doubles Through Mukul Pahuja
Created (6/11/2016 1:33:57 AM by Chad Holloway)

No deal was reached, and in one of the first hands of heads-up play things flipped.

It happened when Mukul Pahuja opened for 1.2 million on the button and Thomas Bolvin three-bet to 3.2 million. Pahuja pushed back by four-betting all in and Bolvin snap-called off for 15.5 million total.

Bolvin: ac qd

Pahuja: kd 5d

Pahuja was drawing to two live cards to win it all, but he missed as the board ran out 9c 10s 3s qh 9h.

TJ Thondup Eliminated in 3rd Place ($186,731)
Created (6/11/2016 1:19:05 AM by Chad Holloway)

TJ Thondup

Thomas Bolvin got his stack of 6.7 million all in preflop and was at risk against TJ Thondup.

Thondup: ks 3s

Bolvin: ah 5c

Bolvin got it in good and left his opponent drawing to running spades on the 7h da as flop. The kd took away any chance of that happening, and Thondup was left with just 4.1 million after the hand.

Two hands later, Thondup shoved the button holding the ah 6s and Bolvin woke up with the as ac in the big blind. The board ran out 8c 2h 5s 7c 6c and that was all she wrote for Thondup.

Michael Rudolph Eliminated in 4th Place ($147,122)
Created (6/11/2016 1:05:29 AM by Chad Holloway)

Michael Rudolph

Michael Rudolph moved all in under the gun for 5.4 million and TJ Thondup called off for 5.1 million from the big blind.

Rudolph: kh 3s

Thondup: 8c 8s

The board ran out 4s 4d 10h 8d kd and Thondup doubled. Rudolph was left with 300,000 after that hand, which went in for the ante and a third of the big blind. He failed to win that as the other three players all called and checked it down, which resulted in Mukul Pahuja winning with a pair of eights.

Michael Rudolph – Eliminated in 4th Place for $147,122
