Three-Time MSPT Champ Carl Carodenuto Leads Final 18 Players After Day 1B

The second and final starting flight of the MSPT Season 17 Grand Falls $1,110 buy-in, $200K GTD is in the books after the hard stop was reached in Level 15 (3,000/6,000/6,000) with 8:56 remaining.

Day 1b attracted another 160 runners during Saturday's action, bringing the grand total to 327 entries, generating a $315,690 prize pool.

Of the 160 runners, just 18 of them remained when chips went into bags, with three-time MSPT Champ Carl Carodenuto leading the charge with 612,000, good enough for second overall.

Following behind Carodenuto was fellow Minnesotan Clint Wolcyn, who was able to end the night with a healthy 506,000, while MSPT Hall of Famer Aaron Johnson (447,000), James Girouard (431,000), and MSPT Champ Joe Matheson (385,000) rounded out the top five stacks.

Others to punch their tickets to Day 2 were MSPT Hall of Famer Gerald Cunniff (299,000), Harold Perez (299,000), ”Wild” Bill Romer (275,000), Greg Sessler (137,000), and Dennis Stevermer (94,000).

MSPT Champ Joe Matheson opened under the gun for 18,000 and then called Jessica Anderson’s 91,000 three-bet jam next to act.

It was a classic race, with Anderson falling behind after the flop gave Matheson trip kings.

The turn then left Anderson needing some lady luck on the river to stay alive, but the completed the board and ended her night on the bubble.

The surviving players from the three starting flights will then return for Day 2 at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 15th, and will play until a winner is crowned.

James Desmet Ships Opening Monster Stack Event!

For the first time this season, the MSPT has traveled to Grand Falls Casino in Larchwood, IA, for their Gold Card Festival Series!

Kicking off the Gold Card Series was Event #1: $250 No-Limit Hold'em Monster Stack, which saw 121 monster hunters take to the tables and created a $24,200 prize pool that was reserved for the top 15 players.

Among those to cash but fall before the final table were Dennis Pike (10th Place - $496), Michael Maloney (11th Place - $496), Jonathon Mackey (12th Place - $496), Brad Olson (13th Place - $411), Jens Jensen (14th Place - $411), and Jay Goughnour (15th Place - $411).

When the dust settled, it was James Desmet who tamed the monster stack to secure the win, taking home the top prize!
