Nuwwarah Leads The 23 Survivors of Day 1A

The first flight of the $1,110 MSPT Main Event at Ameristar Casino in East Chicago smashed all expectations. A total of 196 entrants came out to play, nearly ensuring that the $300,000 prize pool will be eclipsed in tomorrow’s flight.

Leading the way is Iowa’s Mo Nuwwarah who ended his day with 585,000. With $275,796 in live earnings, Nuwwarah has made himself a staple of tournaments all around the midwest. With three MSPT final tables, one of them coming from an East Chicago stop, Nuwwarah possesses a wealth of experience which he used to soar up the chip counts as the day progressed. With his massive bag today he has put himself in a good position to make another deep run.

Only one other player found a bag over half a million and that was MSPT regular Steve Buell (515,000). Two MSPT champions found their way to a bag today as Michael Berk (338,000) and Josh Reichard (276,000) both found their way to a bag sitting right next to each other for a good chunk of the day. Other midwestern crushers that found their way to bags included Michael Puccio (409,000), David Gutfreund (337,000), Terence Reid (294,000), Michael Vanderwoude (237,000), Pat Richert (173,000), Bob Heffner (110,000), and WSOP bracelet winner Kyle Julius (317,000).

Not all saw favorable fortunes today, as players like MSPT champions Kou Vang and Aaron Johnson joined the likes of Mario Arribas, Brad Sailor, Renato Spahiu, Andy Rogowski, Joe Batterman and WSOP bracelet winners Jean Gaspard and Tom Koral in firing one of the following two days to find a bag. Ryan Julius was seeing double at the end of the night as his ace-king ran into Buell’s aces two hands in a row at the end of the night for his entire stack to vanish. With two more flights occurring the following two days, all of these players will have ample opportunity to play for another bag.

Play ended with 12:00 left in Level 15, meaning that unless one of the following flights ends earlier than this, the 23 players from this flight will join the other two flights at 11:00 am on Sunday with this much left on the clock.

Action was picked up with cards on their backs with Steve Buell all in and at risk for 229,000 against Ryan Julius.

The board ran out and the aces held up for Buell to score a massive double through Julius, to leave him with very few chips.

The following hand, Steve Buell raised from under the gun to 12,000 which saw action fold around to Ryan Julius in the small blind who moved all in for 31,000 and Buell called him.

The board ran out as no help to the ace-king and Julius’ night ended in brutal fashion as he became the final player to not find a bag.

Shawn Quinn raised to 12,000 on the button and in the small blind, Richard Motz three bet to 37,000 which Quinn called.

The flop came out and Motz continued for 50,000 which Quinn called.

On the Motz moved all in for 67,000 and Quinn called again.

The river didn’t change anything for Motz and Quinn took down a massive pot late at night.

A player moved all in for 80,000 from the cutoff and on the button, Mo Nuwwarah moved all in for more which saw action fold around.

The board ran out and Nuwwarah made top pair to take out his opponent and become the first player in the tournament to eclipse half a million.

Jack Mayberry raised to 8,000 in first position which saw Christopher Trombley moved all in for 55,000 which saw action fold back to Mayberry who went into the tank. After some time, he put in the chips to call and the hands were turned over.

The board ran out and the ace-king held up for Mayberry to eliminate Trombley from the tournament.

A player opened to 10,000 on the button and in the small blind, Nicholas Cikulin three bet to 20,000 which saw the big blind move all in for 31,000 which only Cikulin called.

The board ran out and Cikulin filled up on the river to crack the pocket aces of his opponent and bring the field one closer to the end of the night.

Brad Sailor moved all in for 65,000 from early position which saw Ryan Julius call in late position and all other players fold.

The board ran out and Sailor wished his tablemates luck as he exited the tournament while Julius rose above 300,000.

Joe Batterman raised to 8,000 in early position which saw action fold around to Josh Reichard in the small blind who three bet to 38,000. Action folded back to Batterman who moved all in for 185,000 and Reichard called.

The flop of put Reichard squarely in the lead with top set, but the turn provided a little bit of a sweat in the form of a gutshot. The river did not complete Batterman’s gutshot and he wished his table luck as the MSPT hall of famer took down a massive pot to ascend up the counts.
