Loki Abboud Leads as 38 Players Survive Day 1A of MSPT Canterbury Park
Created (4/29/2017 2:20:00 AM by Admin System)

Day 1A of the MSPT Canterbury Park – the venue that played host to the first-ever tour stop back in 2009 – drew 222 entrants, which surpassed the previous best opening flight of 219 entries. After 14 levels of play, just 38 remained with Loki Abboud and his stack of 323,500 leading the way.

Abboud is seeking his fourth MSPT Main Event cash, which includes two final table appearances. His best finish to date is sixth here at Canterbury Park last December, good for $17,270. In April 2015, he also final tabled this event but bowed out in 10th place for $5,403.

Rounding out the top five stacks were professional soccer player Bernardo Anora (306,000), #MSPT100 champ Jason Ramos (290,500), Mickey Stuefen (214,000), and three-time MSPT champ Carl Carodenuto (195,000), who won two of his titles here at Canterbury Park.

Others to bag and tag the were Gennady Shimelfarb (108,500), Tony Hartmann (89,000), Katie Gebhart (87,500), reigning champ Jon Kim (81,500), Judd Greenagel (80,500), and Dan “DQ” Hendricksn (78,500).

Of course, not everyone was fortunate enough to survive. Among those to try and fall were 2004 World Series of Poker Main Event champ Greg Raymer; 2016 MSPT Iowa State Poker Champ John Sun; MSPT Pros Blake Bohn, Matt Alexander, and Matt Kirby; Minnesota Poker Hall of Famer Mike Schneider; and a slew of former champs including Luke Arora (MSPT Season 7 Running Aces), Kou Vang (MSPT Season 2 Canterbury Park), Rodger Johnson (MSPT Season 3 Running Aces), and Erv Bjerga (MSPT Season 6 Running Aces).

All of those players will have the chance to try again tomorrow as the Day 1B flight will kick off at 4 p.m. local time. Before that at 10:30 a.m., a last-chance $250 satellite will be held for those looking to get into the tournament on the cheap.

Pocket Rockets for Jason Ramos
Created (4/29/2017 1:55:16 AM by Admin System)

A preflop raising war resulted in Nathan Fair getting his stack of approximately 80,000 all in preflop against #MSPT100 champ Jason Ramos.

Ramos: as ac
Fair: 10s 10c

Ramos was well out in front with the granddaddy of all hands, and it held after the board ran out 6d 3s 2s 4c 9s. With that, Ramos appeared to vault into the chip lead, though we won’t know for sure until the bag and tag.

Joseph Hindman Survives Aaron Johnson
Created (4/29/2017 1:40:18 AM by Admin System)

Joseph Hindman

A short-stacked Joseph Hindman moved all in for 11,600 under the gun and action folded all the way around to Aaron Johnson, who called out of the big blind.

Johnson: ks 2s
Hindman: ah qc

Hindman got it in good, but Johnson was drawing to two live cards. The 9s 7d jd flop was safe for Hindman, but the 10s turn was a scare card as it gave Johnson both straight and flush outs. Fortunately for Hindman, the 9d river was a blank and he shipped the double.

Aaron Johnson - 55,000
Joseph Hindman - 25,000

Jeff Petronack Hits the Rail Courtesy of Rodney Colson
Created (4/29/2017 1:21:29 AM by Admin System)

Rodney Colson

Loki Abboud opened for 4,500 from the cutoff and was met by an all-in three-bet for 28,500 from Jeff Petronack on the button. Rodney Colson then moved all in over the top for 30,500 and Abboud got out of the way.

Petronack: ah qd
Colson: 10d 10h

It was a flip, but Petronack needed to improve to stay alive. It wasn’t meant to be though as the board ran out a lowly 9c 5d 4h 6d 8h.

Rodney Colson - 65,000

Ben Marsh Runs Into Carl Carodenuto's Aces
Created (4/29/2017 1:15:24 AM by Admin System)

Carl Carodenuto

Ben Marsh moved all in for 22,000 from middle position and three-time MSPT champ Carl Carodenuto, who took back-to-back titles here at Canterbury, called from the button. Both blinds folded and Marsh discovered he was way behind.

Carodenuto: as da
Marsh: kd 10d

Marsh needed some major help, but he didn’t even get a little as the board ran out a dry 8h2d 2d 4c 9d.

Covern puts Schrom to the test
Created (4/29/2017 1:05:23 AM by Admin System)

Chris Schrom

Chris Schrom checked on a board reading 3h 6d jh 7h qd and Nez Covern went all in.

Schrom tanked for a full two minutes before he called then let out a sigh of relief when Covern said, “Good call” and tossed his ah kd to the middle of the table.

Schrom showed da 6s (fourth pair) and doubled his stack.

#MSPT100 Champ Jason Ramos Sends Two to the Rail
Created (4/29/2017 12:55:18 AM by Admin System)

Jason Ramos

The preflop action escaped us but we do know that both Jeff Taylor and Jason Sell go all in and were at risk against Jason Ramos, who last month topped a field of 451 entrants to win the MSPT’s 100th Main Event for $108,120.

Ramos: as qs
Sell: qh 8c
Taylor: 9d 9s

Ramos didn’t waste any time taking the lead as the 6s 2s 10s flop delivered him the nuts. The 3s turn left Taylor drawing dead -- Sell was drawing dead on the flop -- and Ramos pulled in the pot after the 3d was put out on the river.

Jason Ramos - 170,000
Jason Sell - Busted
Jeff Taylor - Busted
