Gavin O'Rourke & Soo Jung Kim Lead as 105 of 750 Survive Day 1B of MSPT Venetian
Created (6/5/2018 2:43:49 AM by Admin System)

Day 1B of the $1,100 buy-in, $3.5 million guarantee MSPT Venetian Main Event attracted 750 runners, which along with 1A’s 477 brought the total field up to 1,227 with two flights remaining.

After 15 levels of player in Hall G of the Sands Expo Center, the field was whittled down to 105 players with Ireland’s Gavin O’Rourke and his stack of 530,000 leading the way. A little ways behind with 448,500 is Soo Jung Kim (pictured). Both are ahead of Day 1A chip leader David McConachie, who made it through with 426,000.

Thus far, 168 players (63 from 1A, 105 1B) have punched their ticket to Thursday’s Day 2. Others to bag big stacks were Matthew Hunt (415,500), Ryan Hohner (368,000), and Goran Mandic (362,500), who round out the top five.

They were joined by partypoker MILLIONS Germany runner-up Pavel Plesuv (211,000), WPT champ Aaron Mermelstein (181,500), 2010 PCA winner Harrison Gimbel (151,500), MSPT regular Ron McMillen (134,000), Wisconsin’s Joe Kuether (104,000), Andrew Brokos (95,000), Chicago’s Gary Herstein (94,000), Brian Altman (70,000), Antoine Saout (53,500), and Shannon Shorr (28,500).

Of course, not everyone was fortunate enough to find a bag. Among those to hit the rail on 1B were MSPT Pro Blake Bohn, 2008 WSOP Player of the Year Erick Lindgren, 2006 WSOP Main Event champ Jamie Gold, MSPT Season 7 Venetian champ Thomas Boivin, and former MSPT champs Andy Rubinberg, Ahmed Taleb, Joel Klipping, Paul Cross, Kou Vang, and Nick Jivkov.

Two starting flights remain at Noon local time on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively. Be sure to join us tomorrow as we bring you all the action straight from the tournament floor of the 1C flight.

Created (6/5/2018 1:43:57 AM by Admin System)

Mackenzie Kraemer

Mackenzie Kraemer moved all in for around 38,000 under the gun and action folded to Justin Newton in the small blind. He asked for a count and then moved all in over the top, which drove the player in the big out of the hand.

Newton:
Kraemer:

Kraemer’s best chance at surviving was to catch an ace, but he was left wanting as the board ran out .

Soo Jung Kim Vaults into Chip Lead in Massive Pot
Created (6/5/2018 1:32:20 AM by Admin System)

Soo Jung Kim

In the last hand of Level 14, a massive hand unfolded between Garrett Garvin and Soo Jung Kim.

We picked up the action on the turn with around 100,000 in the middle and a board reading . Kim was all in on the button for 165,000 and Garvin, who was in the big blind, was debating what to do with the 130,000 he had behind.

Eventually, he spiked in a call and discovered the bad news.

Garvin:
Kim:

Garvin had flopped top pair but was drawing dead to Kim’s set of fives. The river was of no consequence and Kim was pushed the gigantic pot while Garvin had no recourse but to head for the exit.

MSPT Strategy: 2018 South Dakota State Poker Championship Came Down to a Tough Decision
Created (6/5/2018 12:50:13 AM by Admin System)

Rick Burleson
Aaron Johnson

In the 2018 MSPT South Dakota State Poker Championship at Deadwood’s Silverado-Franklin Casino, the 286-entry field was down to the final two players when a big hand developed.

It began with the blinds at 30,000/60,000/10,000 when poker pro Aaron Johnson (1.8 million) raised to 120,000 on the button with the and amateur Rick Burleson (3.7 million) three-bet to 260,000 holding the .

When the flop came down , Burleson bet 300,000 and Johnson called. The turn saw Burleson fire out 500,000 and again Johnson just called to see the on the river. Burleson moved all in and Johnson tanked for roughly three minutes before folding the winner. He was left with 845,000 after the hand.

Ultimately, Burleson went on to win the tournament for $63,462 while Johnson finished as runner-up for $39,181. Had he made the call, chances are things would’ve went the other way. We consulted poker pro Jonathan Little of PokerCoaching.com about the hand.

MSPT: If you were in Burleson’s shoes, what would you have done on the flop and why?

Little: First off, I would essentially never three-bet from out of position heads-up. It plays quite well as a call because it will be able to continue on many flops. Also, given the stack sizes, it is somewhat likely that Johnson will go all in over a three-bet, forcing 8-7 suited to fold away its equity, which is a bit of a disaster.

On the flop, I would tend to bet small, perhaps 200,000 into the 540,000 pot. This is an excellent flop for 8-7 and the main goal should be extracting value from worse made hands while forcing various over cards to either fold or make a speculative call. As you bet bigger, it becomes more difficult to get value from the worse made hands and the over cards will rarely make the mistake of calling.

MSPT: Same question regarding the turn?

Little: I would tend to check the turn. If you bet and get action, you will usually be against a better made hand or a hand that has a ton of outs, both of which are not great results. I think a much better play would be to check, looking to check-call a bet. I would have also checked the river to induce bluffs from busted draws.

MSPT: In your opinion, was the river decision a tough spot for Johnson?

Little: I think Johnson had a fairly easy call on the river. When all of the draws miss, you simply cannot fold your best made hands. Johnson should realize in this spot that his Q-8 is one of the best hands in his range. The only justification for this fold would be if he thinks Burleson essentially never bluffs or overvalues a worse made hand. He probably had some sort of read that Burleson liked his hand, which he did. It just so happened that he thought he was vastly overvaluing his decent, but non-nut pair.

MSPT: Johnson seemed to believe that, while he was down in chips, he had the experience and knowledge advantage. By folding, he was still left with 14 bb and likely figured he could find a better spot.

Little: With 14 big blinds, unless your opponent is horrible, if you have an edge, it will be minuscule. You should generally look to avoid close spots if you think you will have many better spots in the future. With 14 big blinds heads-up, it is quite optimistic to think you have lots of time to slowly grind away your opponent.

Most of the time, you will be all in within the next few hands, meaning the idea of "waiting for a better spot" essentially does not apply. This concept mainly applies to heads-up poker when you are playing with very deep stacks and your opponent is either extremely tight/passive (you can slowly blind them down) or overly loose/aggressive (you can frequently bluff catch for lots of chips).

MSPT Heads to Tropicana Evansville August 11-19 for 2018 Indiana State Poker Championship
Created (6/5/2018 12:47:27 AM by Admin System)

Season 9 of the MSPT kicked off at Tropicana Evansville in southern Indiana with a $350 Regional Event back in January, and now we’re headed there again from August 11-19. However, this time it’ll be for the $1,100 buy-in, $250,000 GTD 2018 MSPT Indiana State Poker Championship.

For nearly 22 years, Tropicana Evansville operated as Indiana’s first riverboat casino, and now they’ve become the first to transition to a land-based casino with their new 75,000 square-foot facility.

“Tropicana Evansville has totally transformed,” MSPT President Bryan Mileski boasted. “Gone if the antiquated riverboat and in its place one of the nicest venues in all the Midwest has sprung up. We couldn’t have chosen a nice place for this year’s Indiana State Poker Championship.”

Click here for a look at the full 2018 MSPT Indiana State Poker Championship schedule.

The 2018 MSPT Indiana State Poker Championship will kick off with Day 1A at 2 p.m. on Friday, August 17 with the plan of playing 16 levels. Day 1B will then take place at the same time on Saturday, August 18. Players who advance from Main Event Flight 1A to Day 2 are not eligible to play in Flight 1B without forfeiting their chips. The remaining players from each flight will combine on Sunday, August 19 at 11:00 a.m. and play until a champion is crowned.

The final table will be broadcast LIVE (15-minute delay) worldwide on msptpoker.com using RFID technology allowing all viewers to see the hole cards. In addition, the entire Main Event will be live reported in the MSPT live blog.

It’ll mark the fifth time a Main Event has been held at Tropicana Evansville, albeit the first in the new land-based facility. In August 2017, the 2017 MSPT Indiana State Poker Championship drew 320 entries and saw Satish Thakur claim the title and $71,047 top prize.

In 2016, Earl Potter bested a 340-entry field to win the 2016 MSPT Indiana State Poker Championship for $82,450. Other winners of the MSPT Tropicana Evansville include Michael O’Neill (August 2015 for $67,746) and Charlie Dawson (August 2014 for $60,527).

Tropicana Evansville is a multi-million-dollar entertainment complex located on the scenic banks of the Ohio River in southwestern Indiana. The single-level 24-hour casino, which opened on October 20, 2017, encompasses 45,000 square feet of gaming space featuring 1,175 slot games, 33 table games, a dedicated Poker Room and a High Limit Room.

Accommodations include a 243-room hotel tower and a 95-room boutique hotel. The property showcases an ultramodern entertainment lounge, five dining options, five bars, gift shop, conference center, riverfront pavilion and a 1,660-vehicle attached parking garage.
